Music-Language Connection

By Broc Hite, Piano Instructor

Just in case you need more evidence that music lessons are a good idea, here’s a short article from Time magazine showing evidence that music indeed helps language learning, in Mandarin Chinese at least (h/t Steinway & Sons newsletter).

In Mandarin Chinese, the syllable “ma” can mean different things depending upon which of the four standard vocal inflections are used. Among them are mother and horse! Clearly, this research proves nothing about English, which is not a tonal language – “ma” always means just ma. However, I like to think that learning is universal and that there are holistic connections between all the good things we can introduce to children!
